The GCSE, General Certificate of Secondary Education, is one of the most significant academic qualifications in the United Kingdom for students aged 14 to 16 who are at the end of secondary school. WHO IS GCSE FOR?

GCSE is one of the best qualifications for students studying the British curriculum or in British schools, planning to pursue higher education such as A-levels, will be applying for universities or colleges, willing to receive vocational training or trying to find employment. This exam is mainly for students of the United Kingdom, Wales and Northern Ireland. Preparation for the exam usually takes 2 years due to which students start preparing at the end of secondary education, from Year 10, and appear for the exam in Year 11.

 

GCSE SUBJECT: LIST AND STRUCTURE

The exact number of GCSE subjects varies by school, but students usually take eight to eleven GCSE subjects based on their interest and career goals. There are some core subjects-English language, Mathematics, and Science (Combined science counting as 2 GCSEs or Triple Science counting as 3 separate GCSEs)- which are compulsory for all students. English literature is also compulsory in most of the cases but not in all. Along with these core subjects, students can choose from a pool of optional subjects and select 3 to 5 options (available in the school curriculum).

Since, there is no fixed subject list and it varies due to differences in school's curriculum design and educational framework, therefore, make sure to check the collection of subject courses you can choose from.

 

EXAMINATION FORMAT FOR GCSE

WRITTEN EXAMINATION

Forms the basis for most of the GCSE subjects like English language, English literature, history, sociology, etc.

Types of questions -MCQs, short question-answer, essay questions, calculation based, diagram based, case study questions, data analysis and interpretation and graph interpretation.

 

NON-EXAM ASSESSMENT

Written examinations are not conducted for these subjects and therefore, includes Non- Exam Assessment which is invigilated by teachers during the course and are moderated according to the board requirements.

This assessment is taken basically for the creative and technical subjects.

 

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT

The practical assessment is more common for science subjects which are assessed through practical experiments in laboratory set ups but are also for subjects in creative and technical categories like music performances, drama performances, design and technology projects, etc.

 

SPEAKING ASSESSMENT

This assessment is mainly for the linguistic section, which test a student's language proficiency through tasks like debates and discussions, role play, conversations, etc.

 

GRADING SYSTEM OF GCSE

Anonymous candidate scripts are checked and graded by trained external examiners to ensure fairness. In the UK, GCSE uses the 1-9 grading scale in which 1 signifies the lowest mark obtained while 9 signifies exceptional performance. In Wales and Northern Ireland, they use (A* - U) grading method. This grading scale is equivalent to 2Levels of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF)- Level 1 and Level 2.

 Level 1 - grades D, E, F, G or 1,2,3

 Level 2 - grades A*, A, B, C or 4,5,6,7,8,9.

 

HOW TO REGISTER FOR GCSE EXAM?

Every student (including UAE students) can register for GCSE in two ways -

1)Through their school

2)Through an examination centre (like British Council) or an authorised school that will host you as a 'private candidate'

 

REGISTRATION THROUGH SCHOOL

Schools will complete the registration process on your behalf.

CONFIRM ELIGIBILITY

Before registration, your school will confirm your eligibility criteria (like Year you are studying in, subjects you are eligible to take, examination board, etc.)

 

CHOOSE YOUR GCSE SUBJECTS

You have to choose nearly 8-11 subjects for the GCSE exam.

 

SELECT YOUR EXAMINATION BOARD

The examination boards that offer General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) are OCR, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA, WJEC, Eduqas, and CCEA. You have to select the organization or examination board that your school follows.

 

FILL OUT THE REGISTRATION FORM

You will be given a registration form by your school's examination officer, which you will have to fill out with the required information such as full name, date of birth, identity details (Emirates ID details), passport details, etc.

 

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

You have to submit the documents that your school asks you to provide, such as a passport copy, passport-size photograph, an Emirates ID copy, last academic records, etc.

 

PAYMENT

Pay the required examination fee to your school to complete the registration process.

 

CONFIRMATION CERTIFICATE

After your registration is done, you will receive a confirmation certificate that includes important details like candidate name and number, subject codes, examination centre, etc. You will be required to show this certificate on the day of examination.

 

REGISTRATION FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES

SELECT YOUR EXAMINATION BOARD

The examination boards that offer General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) are Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA. You have to select the organization or examination board that your school follows.

 

CHOOSE SUBJECTS

You have to choose nearly 8-11 subjects for GCSE exam.

 

ONLINE REGISTRATION

You have to create your account in the British Council's School Registration System (SRS) to complete the online registration by providing the requested details.

 

UPLOAD THE DOCUMENTS

If the candidate is under 18 years of age, then a parent or guardian is required to complete the registration by uploading the documents such as a valid passport, identity details (Emirates ID or other accepted identification), a passport-sized photograph, examination reports of previous years, etc.

 

PAYMENT OF THE EXAMINATION FEE

To complete the registration process, the candidate is required to pay the examination fee using an authenticated payment method which is offered by the examination centre.

 

CONFIRMATION CERTIFICATE

After the registration is complete and the fee is paid, you will receive a statement of entry or confirmation certificate, which will include certain important details like candidate number, examination centre, candidate instructions, etc. You will be required to show this certificate on the day of examination.
